Voices

Yesterday Chuck talked about people finding where and how they fit in, with reference to Briefs – but Wake Up, Cameron Dobbs is about discovering who you are, as well.  We all play roles within our biological families and the families of friends we create for ourselves as we grow.  Sometimes the roles used to fit – the “smart” one, the “pretty” one, the “baby,” and when we discover they don’t show who we are now, or who we want to be, we really struggle with how to communicate that to the people we love.

Theatre is a great tool for exploring that – we see the humor in a family who is so used to Cameron not standing up, that they don’t pay any attention to the things he says until he “wakes up,” literally and figuratively, and creates a new day.  There’s honesty in knowing that we’re all works in progress, and that it’s up to us to change ourselves and our circumstances.

Thanks, Steve, for giving us a brand new voice, and here’s to many future performances of Wake Up, Cameron Dobbs.  We’ll see it this weekend and next, and then turn the script over to the next run of the play.

About Renee

Renee Sevier-Monsey is president of West End Players Guild’s board of directors, which means she’s learned to tie pretty bows on the brownies (thank you very much), knows where the mops and buckets are stored, is really good about bringing doughnuts to set builds, and is constantly trying to balance the length of her curtain speeches between all the stuff she has to tell you and the fact that the actors are timing her from the wings. She has her MFA in directing from Lindenwood University, and is a continuing student in the theatre department of the School of Hard Knocks, which has many prestigious graduates. Theatre is a family affair at her house, which gives new meaning to “I can’t, I have rehearsal.”
